Become Qualified & Take Your Career To The Next Level

$49

Duration 1 Hour

The purpose of this course is to teach how overhead capacitors and voltage regulators work, how to detect problems in their operation, and how to safely replace them if necessary. To accomplish this, the course presents the basic theory and operating characteristics of overhead capacitors and voltage regulators and demonstrates how they can be safely replaced.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to describe the function and operation of overhead capacitors, how to detect operating problems, and how to replace an overhead capacitor safely. They should also be able to describe the function and operation of overhead voltage regulators, how to detect voltage regulator problems, and how to safely replace an overhead voltage regulator.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

null

Describe the basic construction and operation of a typical capacitor used on a distribution feeder and define the term “power factor” and explain how capacitors can be used to improve power factor.

null

Describe the basic parts of a capacitor bank installed on an overhead feeder and identify items that should be checked during a visual inspection of a capacitor bank.

null

Describe or demonstrate how a pole top capacitor bank may be isolated and safely discharged and how a damaged pole top capacitor bank may be safely removed and replaced.

null

Describe the construction and induction voltage regulators and step voltage regulators and explain the operation of a voltage regulator control circuit.

null

Describe the basic parts of a step voltage regulator installed on an overhead feeder and describe or demonstrate how to troubleshoot a malfunctioning step voltage regulator.

null

Describe one method of safely zeroing and isolating a voltage regulator before changeout and describe or demonstrate how to safely remove a step voltage regulator from an overhead feeder and install a replacement unit.
