Duration 1 Hour

The purpose of this course is to teach participants basic alternating current (AC) power theory. The course focuses on the relationships between various types of power and on the functions of transformers, voltage regulators, and capacitors in a distribution system.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to define apparent power, true power, reactive power, and power factor and explain the meaning of each term in the context of three-phase AC distribution systems. They should also be able to describe how delta and wye configurations affect voltage and current and how voltage regulators and capacitors are used to affect the power factor in a three-phase distribution system.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

null

Define power in terms in voltage and current and also define apparent power, true power, reactive power and the term three-phase power.

null

Describe the relationships between apparent power, true power, reactive power, and power factor, given true power, and apparent power.

null

Conducting a tailgate meeting according to industry best practices, multilingual requirements, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) General Duty Clause

null

Explain how single-phase and the square root of three are related to three-phase power. and calculate true power in a three-phase system.

null

List some of the advantages that a three-phase system offers over a single-phase system and the common applications for delta-and wye-connected transformers in a three-phase distribution system.

null

Draw a simplified electrical diagram of a delta-configured transformer and a wye-configured transformer.

null

Explain how a delta-configured transformer and a wye-configured transformer affect current and voltage in a three-phase distribution system and how a step voltage regulator and an induction voltage regulator affect voltage in a distribution system.

null

Describe the function of a voltage regulator in a distribution system and how capacitor banks are connected into a distribution system.
