This Gin Pole course is based on the new ANSI standards: A10.48-2016 Criteria for Safety Practices with the Construction, Demolition, Modification and Maintenance of Communication Towers, and TIA 322-2016 Loading, Analysis and Design Criteria Related to the Installation, Alteration and Maintenance of Communication Structures. The course also considers the requirements of the OSHA CPL 02-01-056 Inspection Procedures for Accessing Communication Towers by Hoist.
The focus of this course is to provide information on the design and use of Gin Poles. Rigging, and the components needed for lifting personnel with a gin pole are also covered in this course. Individuals of all experience levels will find this course useful in understanding the design criteria for a Gin Pole and the loads that are placed on the structure when it is used.
The following chapters are covered in this module: History; Regulations and Standards; Rigging; Parts of a Gin Pole; Engineered Lifts; Inspection and Maintenance; Evaluating Existing Poles; Tilted Pole Use; Vertical Small Pole Use; and Vertical Track Pole Use.
Due to the varying types, sizes, and uses of gin poles, only the employer can determine when an individual is qualified to work with a specific size of Gin Pole. An individual will become proficient in Gin Pole use through a mix of technical knowledge and practical training.
